On the backdrop of Strange Weather, the year 2017 ambles in. A strangely warm February has seen me through another round of physical therapy. This time for a pinched nerve bundle affecting my right arm and hand. It should be no surprise this interfered with much of my art making during the later part of last year and the beginning of this year. I am still cautiously introducing activities.
Classes continue, in a variety of drawing, painting and printmaking programs and projects. At Michael’s in Finley Square, Downers Grove, IL there are new drawing in color and instructor’s choice options coming in April. March classes include acrylic painting for kids and adults and drawing. Class days are now Wednesday and Thursday. At the Community Arts Council’s Arts Center in Northfield Square Mall, Bourbonnais, IL, we are expanding the Painting & Drawing Studio, to add an 11:30am-2:30pm class time. Classes are now on Mondays. There is space for 8 students, with options to work with a wide selection of mediums: conte, pastel, watercolor, acrylic or oil painting; subjects range from classic still life, landscape and portrait, to characters, proportions and perspectives for a variety of media presentations. The Youth Art Club will begin projects late spring, including drawing, stamping, markers, colored pencils, and pastel. In April, the next sessions of classes at the Elk Grove Village Park District begin. Introduction to Drawing is a Thursday evening class covering basic techniques and tools. Exploring Acrylic Paints, Mediums and Techniques explores basic and advanced techniques for using the range of textures and tool marks possible at 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.
Ongoing Exhibits include “The Art of Learning” at Life Force Arts Center, Chicago, IL through April 25th, 2017. This group exhibit explores the ways that art is connected to learning. The LFAC Gallery is open on Thursdays, from 1-6pm for open gallery hours, and they run a variety of events every week. The Closing Reception is April 25th, 2017, from 6-10pm.
Opening in mid-March, I am getting ready for “Fortune Cookie” exhibit at Dancing Krow Gallery, located at Harrison Street, Oak Park, IL. The opening reception will be March 17th from 6:30-10:30pm.
At Expressions Graphics, just down the block on Harrison Street, Member and Guest Artists work, printmaking supplies and a range of classes are available. I currently have framed and packaged prints on sale there. Look for some printmaking classes at Expressions Graphics later in the Spring! I am planning some aluminum plate lithography, pronto plate litho and collagraphic plate printing classes. We will have a Calligraphy Workshop in May 19th from 3:30-4:30pm. Let me know if you are interested in more information by email.
The Annual Brushes and Bites Fundraiser for the North Riverside Library has been postponed from the March 18th date this year. The new date should be available after the library foundation meets the week of March 21st. I am delighted to be leading the painting again this year. Visit the Circulation desk at the North Riverside Lbrary to get your ticket today! Our theme this year is a Tulip and Orchid Still Life.
In April, I will return to Glenside Middle School for Career Day. Last year’s group was full of talented young people who were interested in the Arts. It should be fun!
This last year was full of starts and stops, with some illness, some accomplishments and some sadness. Over the summer, with occasional help from Alex and our Niece, the last of the old wall paper was pulled down, and the walls of two bathrooms and a hall given a nice clean coat of paint. It gave new life to rooms and wore me out, as I finished just prior to Thanksgiving. Shortly after, my Dad went through surgery and two months of recovery. We are absolutely grateful that he has made a full recovery. In fact, the local newspaper’s photographer caught him fishing in the unseasonably warm February weather on the Kankakee River.
There are some great new floral fashions on my Vida Signature Collection, just in time for Spring. Images available on new totes and pillows include: The Guardian & The Cycle, Orchids and more from the Gladiolus Series. These lovely pillows and totes make great gifts. See my signature collection to purchase yours today! Here are some of the many options, and there are also new blouses and tops. I earn 10% of the sale on these custom-made items for the use of my designs.
I am looking forward to doing some Plein Air Painting this year in and around my Elk Grove Village, IL studio. Perhaps I will catch some egrets at Busse Woods; the prairie flowers and water lilies at Crabtree Nature Center in Barrington; and some woodland flowers at Wood Dale Nature Center, the Kankakee Area State Parks and the Perry Farm in Bradley. For any students wishing to join a plein air painting trip, contact me by email.
Enjoy the unexpected gifts of the season.
