Watercolor Classes

This class will cover approaches in watercolor for producing still life, landscape and portrait from life, photo or mirror. Demonstrations will include ‘Sketching in Watercolor,’ monochromatic and full color value studies, dynamic and luminous composition, textural approaches for natural plant life including texture, specialty brushes, salt and alcohol techniques, dry brush and massing color. Students will begin with a still life assembled from classroom, instructor’s and student’s own objects. We will look at landscape photos and explore depicting a variety of environments and weather types. For portrait, we will work from photographs, a mirror, or a model. Specific techniques for depicting facial proportion, flesh tones, complimentary color schemes for depth and reflected light will be demonstrated. During the final two hours of class, students will work from a photo, still life or model to develop their own original watercolor. Returning and Advanced students are encouraged to attend this class, following initial demonstrations and during independent work time, instructor will be able to give project specific instruction. Students are encouraged to bring their own image references for projects. Supply list is available online.
